Classic Love and War Tale ‘An American in Paris’ Takes the Hollywood Pantages Stage

An American in Paris” originally premiered on November 9, 1951 at Hollywood’s Egyptian Theatre. It was a well-known story that celebrated love and the romance of dance, and featured performances by Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. The film won several Oscars (including Best Picture), and even beat out competition like “A Place in the Sun” and “A Streetcar Named Desire.” In contemporary times, the film inspired the likes of Damien Chazelle (“La La Land and “Whiplash”) and ballet dancer Christopher Wheeldon, who choreographed a Tony Award-winning musical inspired by “An American in Paris.”

Fortunately, The Hollywood Pantages is bringing “An American in Paris” to the stage from March 22 – April 9. Inspired by the Academy Award-winning film, the play focuses on characters fresh from the horrors of World War II. American veteran Jerry Mulligan decides a fresh start is in order and moves to Paris. Inspired by the creativity and romance which fills his new hometown’s boulevards, Mulligan sets his heart on becoming a painter. Once he gains a wealthy sponsor for a solo exhibition, his career seems to be on the rise. The fact that he has just met a beautiful girl by the name of Lise has him thinking that life can’t seem to get any better. Yet Lise seems unwilling to wholeheartedly return his affection, and when the reason for her reticence emerges, it threatens to cast a cloud over Jerry’s previously joyous existence in the city of love.

This hit musical features songs written by Ira and George Gershwin and Tony-winning choreography from Christopher Wheeldon. It’s already won it share of accolades, including Outer Critics Circle Awards, Drama Desk Awards, Drama League Awards, Fred and Adele Astaire Awards, and Theatre World Awards. This version has an all-star cast including Garen Scribner, McGee Maddox, Sara Esty, Etai Benson, Emily Ferranti, Gayton Scott, Nick Spangler, Leigh-Ann Esty, and Ryan Steele.
