Will Jimmy McGill’s Past Finally Catch up With Him on AMC’s ‘Better Call Saul’ Season 3?

Better Call Saul has returned for its third season on AMC. And while it picked up where it left off, there are still several underlying questions of what the future holds for the main character – especially Saul Goodman. There was much speculation that Goodman would finally make an appearance in the third season premiere. When that didn’t happen, it brought about the question of whether viewers will be meeting the title character at all this season.

Meanwhile, there are enough issues to go around for Goodman’s current identity, Jimmy McGill. When we last saw him, it seemed like he had unknowingly lost a major battle against his brother, Chuck McGill, after Chuck secretly recorded their conversation that included Jimmy confessing his involvement in a scandal. But even Chuck should know that he could never use that recording in court. Still, the tainted brotherhood might not have seen its last days as Howard points out that he has another plan for the recording. Of course, viewers will have to tune in to the rest of the season to find out what that plan is. All that has been revealed so far is that it is related to “Snidely Whiplash.” But this could be what leads to Jimmy’s ultimate downfall.

The dynamic between Jimmy McGill and his future identity Gene is kind of a depressing one. And it looks like it will play out for the rest of the third season. Viewers became more acquainted with Gene in the opening of the third season. It began with a black-and-white scene, just like the first two seasons, and showed Gene behind the counter of his latest venture; a manager at Cinnabon. It’s not clear how he ended up here, but a guess is that the correlation could be revealed as new episodes air. What viewers do know about Gene is that he is definitely not as witty as Jimmy McGill. He does allow a small sample of his “Saul Goodman” character to come out when he yells, “Say nothing, you understand?! Get a lawyer!” to a teen boy who was just caught stealing from Cinnabon. Keep in mind Gene helped the police nab him. While the perp is clearly unbothered, the drama appeared to be way too much for Gene to handle as he collapsed behind the counter. Viewers were only left to wonder how Jimmy could have fallen so far.

His fallout with Chuck might have led to his future disgrace, as Chuck warned Jimmy in the premiere, “Don’t think I’ll ever forget what happened here today. And you will pay.” While Chuck doesn’t know what to do with the tape just yet, Ernie gets a piece of it when he accidentally plays it. This isn’t necessarily a good thing for Chuck, considering Ernie’s loyalty to Jimmy. But Chuck just might be desperate enough to do whatever it takes to guarantee Ernie will not blow his cover.

If Jimmy didn’t have enough problems trying to outsmart his brother, he is caught up in another lie as the Air Force captain from season two returns after he realizes Jimmy scammed him. Jimmy seems to win the argument, but the captain could win the war as he warns Jimmy, “The wheel’s gonna turn. It always does.” This is the second threat Jimmy received in this episode.

Jimmy’s past is definitely bound to catch up with him; it’s just a question of whether it will happen this season.

Better Call Saul” season 3 premiered April 10 and airs Mondays at 10 p.m. ET on AMC.
