The Saint of Killers Are Irrepressible in Season 2 of ‘Preacher’

Preacher” is an unusual show with more twists and turns than you can imagine involving an alcoholic man of the church, Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), who meets an equally alcoholic 119-year-old Irish vampire, Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun). In season one, we are introduced to Jesse, who has a violent past and has made a personal vendetta to find God, who he realizes is no longer in heaven. Consisting of Jesse’s erratic lover Tulip (Ruth Negga) and his undead companion Cassidy, the trio find themselves battling gangsters, secret agents and the Saint of Killers during their quest to renounce control of Genesis, an unknown entity.

Although the television series is an adaptation of comic books of the same name; co-creators Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Sam Catlin have captured the essence of the comic books with the series. The original comic books were created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon; published by DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint.

Season two of “Preacher” immediately addresses the large cliffhanger that viewers were left with — Jesse staring down at the Saint of Killers, who are on assignment to kill him, with a bullet coming straight at his face. With the stakes now vastly raised, season two will also be an expansion of the plots and character arcs that are prominent in the comic. Viewers can expect jaw-dropping and staggering moments with the action moving from Texas (where an entire town was wiped out) to the hypnotic streets of New Orleans.

The fate of Cassidy, who now has a heel of vampire killers in tow, is also explored in further detail. Although Jesse is not a vampire hunter, it will be interesting to say the least when he does come across one other than his sidekick. Familiar faces from the original comic will also make their debut in season two. Among them are Herr Starr (Pip Torrens), a ruthless enforcer of an ancient religious conspiracy called the Grail. Julie Ann Emery (“Better Call Saul”) has been tapped to play Featherstone with Malcolm Barrett portraying Agent Hoover.

The newest installments of the episodic series will further explore the seditious and mysterious persona of the preacher that leaves many emotions left to be explored throughout the season. Comic book adaptations are making huge waves in the television world, and “Preacher” has executed its delivery flawlessly.

Preacher”  season 2 premiered on AMC June 25 and airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET.
