Chromeo to Get a Leg up at the Shrine Expo Hall

Chromeo is self-described as the “only successful Arab/Jewish partnership since the dawn of human culture” by way of Montreal, Canada that knows how to get funky. David Macklovitch aka Dave 1 and Patrick Gemayel aka P-Thug, the duo that is Chromeo are childhood friends and their live chemistry is a testimony to the longevity and depth of their friendship. Their 2004 debut She’s In Control featured the single “Needy Girl” that gained Chromeo notoriety. The single is an upbeat disco song with robotic vocals and DJ scratches. Chromeo has been compared to 80’s bands like Hall & Oates. They eventually had a jam session with Daryl Hall on his TV Show Live From Daryl’s House and an appearance at Bonnaroo.

Fancy Footwork and Business Casual continued the group’s success and both albums were extremely well received by critics. The band’s most recent release, White Women, was called “Larry David funk” by the band, due to the neurotic and comical tone of the lyrics. Fans of Chromeo know the band for their sense of humor, Chromeo posted the release date and album art for White Women via the missed connections section of Craigslist. The band is known for their trademarked women’s leg stands to hold up their electronic instruments. Dave 1’s guitar turns into a search light that he blast into the audience.

Their live show is noted for its theatrics and entertainment value rather than Chromeo’s musical ability. It’s hotly debated whether the band is an ironic satirical take on disco or if they are being creatively serious; in the end it may not matter because the duo is all about providing a good time.

Chromeo will funk up the Shrine Expo Hall October 9.
