Future Islands to Perform at The Wiltern

Synthpop band Future Islands is set to perform a sold-out show at The Wiltern on Nov. 20. Joining them on their tour will be Rose Quartz and Speak.

Future Islands was formed back in 2006 when the original members were studying art at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. The group is made up of lyricist and vocalist Samuel T. Herring, bassist and electric guitarist William Cashion, and keyboardist and programmer Gerrit Welmers as well as current touring drummer Michael Lowry.

The EP, “Little Advances” was first released in April 2006, followed by a self-released split CD with Welmer’s solo project Moss of Aura in Jan. 2007. Debut album “Wave Like Home” was soon released in Aug. 2008, which was recorded with Chester Endersby Gwazda at the Backdoor Skateshop in Greenville. The group relocated to Baltimore, Maryland in 2008 after the departure of former bassist, Erick Murillo.

Their second studio album, “In Evening Air,” was “recorded in the band’s living room in the historic Marble Hill neighborhood” of Baltimore. Come 2009 the band was signed to Chicago independent record label Thrill Jockey. Third album “On the Water” was recorded in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, in the historic waterfront home of Andrew S. Sanders, and was followed by a release in fall 2011.

Experiencing changes was never a foreign feeling for Future Islands, and so they adjusted well to signing with 4AD, who released their fourth and most recent album, “Singles,” in March 2014.

Future Islands has staked their claim for the best venues the U.S. has to offer and you should see them for a special performance at The Wiltern before they return to the East Coast.
