Fans Flock to Long Beach for A Flock of Seagulls

It’s been a long time since A Flock of Seagulls was a household name, and an even longer time since founding member Mike Score flipped his head of well-quaffed hair. But for one night only, the Mozambique Steakhouse Bar and Lounge will be hosting a Flock of Seagulls throwback on Nov. 15.

The eighties synth-pop combo band rose to fame for hit singles “I Ran (So Far Away)” and “Space Age Love Song,” but fell from the public eye nearly as quickly. Their short-lived fame was thanks in part to MTV. Their video for “I Ran” played relentlessly for an entire summer on the channel, being one of the first and best music videos of its kind. Unable to top their first few hits or develop a sound outside their blatantly eighties dance anthems, the original members of Flock of Seagulls dispersed.

Mike Score, who started the band in his native Liverpool, was the glue that held the group together from the beginning. He had started his career as a hairdresser, which may explain the trademarked hairdo that often upstaged the music. After the band’s popularity declined, Score tried replacing members one at a time over the years. He went on to produce a few unsuccessful albums, with varying algorithms of both original and replacements. Just this March, Score finally struck out on his own to score, with long-awaited solo album “Zeebrata.”

A Flock of Seagulls may be a band famed for a haircut, but they were redefining cool before they knew what was cool. A couple of hairdressers from Liverpool inspired a cult-following (their fans refer to them as “AFOS”), and wound up as one of the most cliched pop-culture punchlines of all time.

Don’t miss a chance to see Mike Score and his seagulls live in Los Angeles this November. Mozambique Bar and Lounge hosts live music every night of the week. Guests are encouraged to make reservations for dinner before the show, but standing-room-only tickets are available for just the music event as well.

A Flock of Seagulls will be at Mozambique Steakhouse Bar and Lounge on Nov. 15. Tickets are available for purchase here.
