James Vincent McMorrow to Infuse Los Angeles with His ‘Post Tropical’ Vocals

Endlessly compared to Justin Vernon’s ‘Bon Iver,’ is Irish singer/songwriter James Vincent McMorrow, who will be ending his current U.S. tour at The Theatre at Ace Hotel on Nov. 20.

McMorrow spent most of his adolescence beating his drum set, turning to songwriting in his college years. He began experimenting on guitar at age 19 and began performing in local pubs. From there, he was urged to record his music. McMorrow segregated himself from the world to a house on the coast of Ireland and started writing. He released his first album, ‘Early in the Morning’ throughout Europe in 2010, and in the U.S. in 2011. That same year, his single covering Steve Winwood’s ‘Higher Love’ rose to No. 21 on the UK Singles Chart. McMorrow received a ‘European Border Breakers Award’ due to the circulation of his music stemming beyond Irish audiences.

After the release of McMorrow’s first album, he toured for eight months and scribbled down new ideas as he disconnected with his original material. He deflected his labeling of “singer/songwriter” although that’s how he presented himself on tour. McMorrow claimed that he didn’t just want to be another guy with a guitar and was ready to turn his scribbled ideas into music. Determined to seize a more appealing label, McMorrow relocated to a pecan farm near the border of Mexico “to make the most beautiful thing that [he] could imagine.” This destination in Texas had previously been a writing haven for bands like The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Beach House. After a three and a half week seclusion, his newest and stoutly different album, “Post Tropical” was birthed in January 2014. ‘Post Tropical’ hit No. 2 on the Irish Album Charts upon its release.

McMorrow’s discoveries have changed his music since he started writing, which will be present at his performance at The Theatre at Ace Hotel.
