De La Soul to Perform Two Nights at House of Blues

De La Soul will be performing two nights at the House of Blues on Sunset Boulevard. The alt-hip/hop group will be celebrating the anniversary of their groundbreaking 1989 album “3 Feet High and Rising” with the 25-year De La Soul Tour. Expect to hear many of their classics and fan favorites like “The Magic Number” and “Me Myself and I,” and with a new album titled “You’re Welcome” ready to hit shelves in 2015, don’t be surprised if they play some unreleased tracks.

Formed in 1987 in Long Island, the hip/hop trio is beloved for its eclectic sound and eccentric lyrics. Their songs are a hybrid of jazz rap and alternative hip/hop with a few contemporary influences. Band members Kelvin Mercer, David Jude Jolicoeur, and Vincent Mason founded the band with the purpose of spreading peace and harmony. They quickly gained recognition as hippies and even inspired a personal philosophy known as D.A.I.S.Y, which stands for “da inner sound, y’all.” Their first album “3 Feet High and Rising” was an instant critical success and virtually shot them into stardom overnight. Audiences appreciate the positive messages behind their eccentric jams. More recently, the group won a Grammy Award for its part on the Gorillaz single “Feel Good Inc.”

The band members formed while in high school, originally playing at local gigs before being discovered by New York producer Prince Paul. Paul initially caught wind of the trio’s prowess after listening to a demo tape of the trio’s hit song “Plug Tunin.” Enthralled by the group’s innovative and spirited new sound, Paul quickly began working on releasing De La Soul’s first studio album.

The success of their sophomore album, “De La Soul is Dead,” cemented their status as an established group with fresh sounds to offer. They quickly climbed the hip/hop charts, garnering an avid fan base in the process.

De La Soul is a veteran in the music industry and continues to draw success even decades after their initial splash. Their performances draw both new and old fans so don’t think it’s too late to jump on the bandwagon. Seeing the group live has been described as both a mix of older original fans break-dancing to younger ones head bobbing to the tunes. Come out to the House of Blues to catch this iconic group’s sure-to-be stellar performance.
