G. Love & Special Sauce Celebrate 20 Years at House of Blues

House of Blues Sunset is having G. Love & Special Sauce not once but three times in the new year. The band will play Jan. 16, 17 and 18 at House of Blues Sunset. Love has been around for over 20 years. Later adding the Special Sauce, he’s had numerous records and has toured the world more times than one can count. Fans flock to see him and the Sauce play music that’s been described as alternative hip-hop with some R&B tossed in the mix. Looking at pictures, that is not what would be expected but people like the uniqueness of the band. That’s why G. Love has been at it for so long.

Garrett Dutton aka G. Love started doing music back in 1993. Then he went through some Sauce change ups and currently hits the stage with his drummer Jeffrey Clemens otherwise known as Houseman and their bassist Jimi Jazz whose birth name is Jim Prescott. The trio just dropped their latest album “Sugar” on Brushfire Records to celebrate the band’s 20th anniversary as well as the return of Jimi Jazz. It features the single, “Nothing Quite Like Home.”

The band will hit the road Jan. 15 in Arizona at The Marquee Theater and then head west for the three nights on the Strip at House of Blues Sunset. After that they’ll head south, north and then east for almost three months. Finally they’ll wrap things up at Jannus Live in St. Petersburg, Florida on March 28.

Sharing the stage the whole time will be singer-songwriter Matt Costa. It’s an odd choice but will add variety to the set. Costa broke out back in 2005 after touring with Jack Johnson. His independent release “Songs We Sing” was well received by fans, but it wasn’t until 2008 that his name hit some mainstream fame when “Mr. Pitiful” from “Unfamiliar Faces” was used in an iPod commercial. He’s been touring since then and released his latest self-titled record in 2013.

The two artists land on very different sides of the spectrum so the crowd will be an interesting one. Most will be there for G. Love & Special Sauce, but Costa does have a strong indie following who will come out to support their local boy. He hails from Huntington Beach, California.
