Award-Winning Play ‘The Other Place’ Comes to The Road Theatre Company
Sharr White’s award-winning play “The Other Place” begins previews Feb. 15 at The Road Theatre Company’s Magnolia space in North Hollywood and runs through May 17.
Juliana Smithton’s life is unraveling. The successful neurologist finds herself in the midst of a crisis turned mystery in which the lines between fact and fiction disappear. “The Other Place,” sends the audience time traveling through non-linear scenes stitched together by fragments of a speech Juliana is giving at a work-related convention. “The Other Place” premiered off-Broadway in 2011 before transferring to Broadway for a limited run. The production was directed by Joe Mantello and the original cast was headlined by stage and television star Laurie Metcalf, who was nominated for Best Actress for her portrayal of Juliana. “The Other Place,” was nominated for a Tony Award, an Obie Award and 2 Outer Circle Critic Awards including Outstanding New Play.
Sharr White is no stranger to familial drama. “Snow Geese,” a WWI drama starring Mary-Louise Parker, ran on Broadway in 2013 and captured a family on the precipice of a changing world. More locally, White’s dramatic “Annapurna,” ran at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in Los Angeles in early 2013, featuring television stars Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman. His other works have been developed all over the country at regional theaters and theatre festivals.
The Road Theatre Company was founded in 1991 and has enjoyed a successful 19-year run producing quality theatre in North Hollywood. In addition to a myriad of Los Angeles theatre award wins and nominations, the company was honored in 2003 with the Back Stage West Landmark Award for Sustained Excellence in Theatre and the prestigious 1998 Los Angeles Drama Critics’ Circle Margaret Harford Award for Sustained Excellence in Theatre. In 2010, L.A Weekly called The Road Theatre Company, “One of the best theatres of the decade,” and most recently, the company opened a second space on Magnolia at NoHo Senior Arts Colony.
