A Noise Within Presents ‘Figaro’

This season, LA Opera is producing three operas based on the eighteenth-century “Figaro,” play trilogy. The operatic productions are just the beginning of a whole host of Figaro events happening this year around Los Angeles as part of LA Opera’s “Figaro Unbound Festival.” One of the most anticipated theatrical events of the festival is classical theatre company, A Noise Within’s version of “Figaro.” The modern adaptation is inspired by Beaumarchais’s “Le Mariage de Figaro,” and hits the stage March 1 through May 10.

In 1786, the character of Figaro was living and working in the home of a Count and Countess in Seville, Spain. In the original story, the Count decides he wants to ditch the Countess and woo Figaro’s intended, but is of course thwarted by the end of the day through a series of comic manipulations. The new version takes on the story with a similar tone, updated to encompass the pace and humor of today. April 10, 19, or May 1, audiences will get the chance to chat with some of the cast and creative team and ask questions about the story, the production, and the Charles Morey adaptation.

Charles Morey is a playwright known for adapting classical works for modern audiences. His “Figaro,” ran off-Broadway at The Pearl Theatre Company in 2012, and the A Noise Within production will be the first professional production, since. The New York Times said, “Charles Morey’s spry adaptation of ‘The Marriage of Figaro’ taps its 21st-century parallels with a nimble hand.”

All of these events and many more are happening around the city as part of LA Opera’s “Figaro Unbound Festival.” LA Opera’s Off Grand Company premiered “¡Figaro! (90210),” an operatic adaptation set in modern-day Los Angeles. Since January, LACMA has hosted the exhibit, “Visual Art in the Time of Figaro,” and throughout February, the Arclight Cinemas will be presenting a whole slew of Figaro-ified films.
