‘The English Bride’ Takes Off at The Road Theatre Company

There are two kinds of people in the world: people who read spoilers, and people who don’t. However, sometimes, a film or play is based on a real event and everyone knows how the story ends. What if, “The mystery wasn’t what happened; the mystery was why.” This is exactly the case in “The English Bride,” a play by Lucile Lichtblau, and is being billed as such. The production runs at The Road Theatre Company in North Hollywood March 5 through May 10.

The year was 1986 and a veteran member of the Israeli Intelligence Force, or the “Mossad,” was desperate to uncover the truth behind a terrorist threat on an El-Al flight. Add to the mix an English woman flying from London to Israel with her Arab lover, and a suitcase the couple is carrying that contains-you guessed it-a bomb. You’ll wind up with not only a real-life international scandal, but also a platform for an evening of great drama. The show takes on the convention of an interrogation session, with the Mossad officer interrogating the two passengers and raising questions of morality while relentlessly seeking truth.

Lucile Lichtblau’s espionage thriller enjoyed a successful run at the Drama Desk Award-Winning 59E59 Theater in New York in 2013, and will be making its West Coast premiere at The Road Theatre Company. The three-person cast features members of The Road Theatre Company Ensemble and is directed by Marya Mazor, award-winning director of both theatre and film.

The Road Theatre Company was founded in 1991 and has enjoyed a successful 19-year run producing quality theatre in North Hollywood. In addition to a myriad of Los Angeles theatre award wins and nominations, the company was honored in 2003 with the Back Stage West Landmark Award for Sustained Excellence in Theatre and the prestigious 1998 Los Angeles Drama Critics’ Circle Margaret Harford Award for Sustained Excellence in Theatre. In 2010, L.A Weekly called The Road Theatre Company, “One of the best theatres of the decade,” and most recently, the company opened a second space on Magnolia at NoHo Senior Arts Colony.
