Kimbra’s Electropop Comes to the El Rey

She scored big around the world as a featured artist, but since then Kimbra has continued to set her sights on solo stardom. Many pop artists are being imported from New Zealand, such as Lorde, BROODS, and of course Kimbra. Born 25 years ago, Kimbra took to writing music when she was merely ten-years-old. A couple years later, her dad bought her a guitar and it wasn’t long after that she was on stage performing. Around that same time, she had the chance to sing the national anthem in front of 27,000 people at the NPC Rugby Union final.

Clearly talented, she continued to work towards her goal of music as her future. At 17 she won the Juice TV award for Best Breakthrough music video for her second single “Simply on My Lips.” It was then that she caught the eyes and ears of Mark Richardson. She signed with him and moved to Australia the following year. In 2010, she started to make waves with her single “Settle Down” and her album “Vows” was a bit of a success to her being featured on the song of 2011, Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know.”  That same year she had her biggest chart showing in Australia with “Good Intent.”

Today she’s a Grammy winner thanks to her stunning performance on that inescapable Gotye song and, in reality, is only the third artist from New Zealand to take one of those home. With that under her belt, a few years later she released her sophomore effort, “The Golden Echo.” It received huge positive love from critics and from it came singles “90’s Music” and “Miracle.”

Kimbra will be kicking off her spring tour in San Diego right before she hits Los Angeles. Then she’ll play dates up and down the west coast, as well as both weekends of Coachella where she’ll share the stage with Alabama Shakes, Drake, Ryn Weaver and more.
