Matt and Kim Dance Their Way to The Fonda

Over a decade ago, a guy and a girl named Matt and Kim decided to band together and today they’re one of the most loved indie duos out there. They have a new album out this month and are bringing their show to Los Angeles at The Fonda on April 28.

Matt Johnson had the pipes and keys, and Kim Schifino had a pair of sticks and a set of drums. They settled on a DIY style in 2004 and have been working hard on world domination ever since. Two years after coming together, they released their self-titled debut and without the help of the mainstream sold a lot of copies at their shows. Indie fans praised their audacity and their old school way of doing things not only made them favorites in their scene, but also earned them a lot of respect. It was enough appreciation and respect to earn them slots on huge shows like The Siren Music Festival and Lollapalooza.

A few years later, in 2009, they had a label but didn’t abandon that DIY mentality as they recorded their follow up album, “Grand” in Matt’s childhood room in Vermont. The first single from that record, “Daylight,” peaked in the top 100, was featured in a Bacardi commercial and was used in the credits for season six of HBO’s “Entourage,” while the video for “Lessons Learned” earned them a lot of attention. It featured the pair stripping down and playing in Times Square in the middle of February’s cold. It got everyone talking and solidified Matt and Kim’s stance in the indie realm.

They started to become a go to band for songs when it came to TV spots. In 2010, “Cameras” was in commercials and movie trailers, and “Don’t Slow Down”  was featured on MTV’s “Underemployed.” Their last album 2012 produced a powerhouse single, “Let’s Go.” It was in the hit series “The Mindy Project.” Now the band is looking forward to repeating history with their latest batch of songs on their 2015 release, “New Glow.” So far, its lead single has already made some noise on Billboard, hitting number 27 on the US alternative charts.
