Alison Wonderland Will Take El Rey Down the Rabbit Hole
Stephanie Hernandez
Sydney based DJ and producer Alex Scholler, better known by her stage name Alison Wonderland has been packing warehouse raves and festival tents more than any other DJ this year. Alison began her career as a classical cellist and in 2014 traded her bow for a turntable and she hasn’t looked back since. Currently on an international tour in promotion of her debut album, “Run” fans can plan on lacing up their dancing shoes May 16 at The El Rey Theatre.
Alison’s musical ambitions began on the more classical path, beginning back in her days of the principal cellist in the Sydney Youth Orchestra and as the bassist in an indie rock band. These early endeavors gave Alison a deep understanding of composition and sound, but it was not until she heard The Knife album, “Silent Shout” that she truly fell in love with EDM and was inspired to make her own way in the genre. Alison released her debut EP “Calm Down” in early 2014 on Astralwerks, the same label that produces the likes of The Chemical Brothers and Hot Chip. Reaching the top of the iTunes charts the EP amassed over two million streams on Alison’s Soundcloud account in just a few days. Praised by EDM giant Diplo, as being “one of the best DJs from Australia,” Alison’s intricate sets paired with her flawless production truly set her apart from the waves of emerging electronic artists. With high energy singles like “I Want U” and “Cold” as well as collaborations with famed Norwegian Lido, it is no wonder why Wonderland’s blend of techno trap-pop have managed to keep her from being a one-hit wonder.
Alison’s dynamic approach to music has gained her an almost cult-like following. Her live shows are multimedia sensory experiences that are not easily forgotten. With the recent release of her debut record “Run,” now is the time to catch this Aussie bring the house down.
