Fall Out Boy and Wiz Khalifa Bring Their ‘Boyz of Zummer’ Tour to Hollywood Bowl

One would think that the kings of pop rock teaming up with one of the most talked about rappers for a summer tour might not mix, but that’s not the case. Fall Out Boy has worked with notable hip hop artists in the past, so sharing the stage with Wiz Khalifa isn’t anything new to them. They’re bringing their arena laced rock, and he’s packing up his laid back vibes for a tour that’s a little bit street and a whole lotta rock n’ roll on the Boyz of Zummer Tour.

Fall Out Boy got their start in the suburbs of Chicago. Like many their age they played covers of their heroes but quickly learned that their way to the top couldn’t be paved in copycat ways. Bassist Pete Wentz was a powerhouse with a pen, and with Patrick Stump on vocals they slowly started to gain local notoriety. After some years playing here and there and being the opening act, they found mainstream success in 2005 with “Under the Cork Tree” and their smash, “Sugar, We’re Goin Down.” It dominated MTV and helped anchor the already in effect, emo phase that was taking over high schools everywhere. From there on out they were a giant among their peers. The 2007 follow-up, “Infinity On High,” found them working with Jay Z and scoring a number one album.

Of course every dog has his day, every dog has to take a break, and in 2010 the band walked away from the spotlight with the announcement of a hiatus. It wasn’t too long though and in those few years some of their older fans grew apart from their once favorite group and in their place came a wave of younger fans who regarded their first album back and the greatest. 2013’s “Save Rock and Roll” was a critic’s dream and found the band on a new level musically. The once pop punk boys were now men on a mission. Most recently they impressed critics and their new fans with their latest, “American Beauty/American Psycho.”

The year Fall Out Boy stepped down, a rapper from Pittsburgh was finding himself on the tips of everyone’s tongues after some years of lying low. Wiz Khalifa dropped his debut in 2006 but didn’t score a hit until 2010 when “Black and Yellow” was everywhere – everywhere. He’s remained a rap mainstay since then with his most recent single making people shed tears. His contribution to the “Furious 7” soundtrack, “See You Again,” definitely made him one to watch in 2015.

Fall Out Boy and Wiz Khalifa’s “Boyz of Zummer” tour hits the Hollywood Bowl August 10. Tickets can be purchased here.
