Xavier Dolan’s ‘Mommy’ Hits Los Angeles Theaters

“Mommy” has been making the rounds around the world and hitting every major festival over the past year. Now, you can finally see it at a theater in Los Angeles Dec. 12

“Mommy” follows the story of Anne Dorval as Diane “Die” Despairs, a widowed single mother left raising her son (Antoine-Olivier Pilon), who has a violent streak. Unfortunately, due to their circumstances, they are looked down upon by many in their town who consider them white trash. Die goes above and beyond to remove her son from institutionalization, where he was put due to his ADHD. However, the story takes a turn when their neighbor, played by Suzanne Clément, starts to infiltrate their household.

Direction Xavier Dolan gained notoriety when he not only starred but also directed “I Killed My Mother” in 2009 at just 20-years-old. Now at the ripe age of 25 he’s looking to gain more than acclaim, but some gold with “Mommy.” As the Canadian entry for “Best Foreign Language Film” at the Oscars, he may just have a chance.

While it may not win over the Academy just yet, it has won acclaim and awards at many film festivals around the world. “Mommy” made its US festival debut back Aug. 29 at the Telluride Film Festival and has since been shown at the Philadelphia International Film Festival, Virginia Film Festival and Virginia Film Festival. At Cannes, “Mommy” won the coveted Jury Prize.

Mommy’ opens in Los Angeles theaters on Dec. 12.
