Georgia Knotts of Broods Dishes on Performing ‘Conscious’ Live and Why She Still Gets Nervous Before Shows

As a brother-sister duo, the chemistry between Broods singer Georgia Knotts and her instrumentalist/producer brother Caleb has always been obvious. On their debut “Evergreens,” the band showcased a refreshingly original, electronic-influenced alternative-pop sound while their second, the recently -released, “Conscious expounds on the creative ideas proposed on ”Evergreens.” As the band prepared to embark on the North American leg of their “Conscious” tour, Georgia took time to speak with Entertainment Voice.

Will the upcoming “Conscious” tour be the first time fans have the opportunity to hear songs from the new LP performed live?

We played a few when we were on tour with Elle (Goulding) in April, we played a couple of them there but we definitely saved a lot of it just for this tour. We’ve done the Australian and New Zealand legs already, and that went really awesome and the new stuff went down really well. We are excited to see how the States and Canada take it!

Has your and Caleb’s approach to performing live changed at all since your last tour?

Just from watching and picking things up from other people we’ve toured with. It amazing how different songs kind of get different reactions. For us, we’re always trying to get better which means always changing what we are doing and our style of performing.

As time has gone on and you’ve gotten more used to touring but the crowds have become larger and larger, do you find yourself more or less nervous before shows?

I think I’m more nervous. If we are going to a new place to play a show we want it to show that we’ve been working hard, whether our sound or our performance and everything about it. So I think this tour I’ve been getting a lot more nervous then I usually do. Just because the songs are a quite hard to sing live as well. I really decided to challenge myself.

Do you find that performing with your sibling gives you a stronger connection on stage than you would have with other musicians?

I don’t know we [Broods’ touring band] are really close and the people that we tour with become our family. We treat everybody on our tour as if they were our family. I think definitely we want to create a comfortable situation on our tour.

After Joe Little produced “Evergreen,” did you know that you wanted to have him back to helm the sessions for “Conscious?”

I feel like we’ll always work with him to be honest. He’s been such a part of our lives and our careers and we’ve been working with him since before we were even Broods, when I was in high school. I think his opinion is one of the highest held in our eyes, and we’ve all grown together which is really cool.

Your recent single “Heartlines” was co-written with Lorde. Does co-writing with outside artists change your process significantly from when you are writing alone with Caleb?

It is interesting when you work with new people and you see their process. It’s always good to learn from other people’s creative process. It’s one of those ‘learn by doing’ type things, seeing how other people have different ways of doing things.

The title track from “Conscious” serves as somewhat of an epilogue, how do you fit the song into your live set?

It’s such a massive song, it’s huge, huge song live as well and it’s probably one of my favorites to play of all our songs.

Do you have a specified set list for every night or does it change throughout the tour?

We usually play the same thing although we’ll change it slightly just to see if it works or doesn’t work. If we are playing a festival, we’ll change up the set list. But usually we stick to the same order.
