Cold War Kids Expand on What They Are Known for With ‘LA Divine’

The Cold War Kids‘ new album “LA Divine” isn’t much of a stretch from what Cold War Kids have done in the past with 2014’s “Hold My Home” and 2012’s “Dear Miss Lonelyhearts.” Their sound has always been inescapably catchy with lead singer Nathan Willet’s gospel voice leading the charge, as well as the pounding drums of former drummer Matt Aveiro and current drummer (and Modest Mouse percussionist) Joe Plummer. “LA Divine” may seem radio-friendly simply because this band has so solidified their sound to a point where only an impossibly cohesive band could.

These blue-eyed blues players put forth the lead single “Love is Mystical” before the album release. Like many Cold War songs, this track starts with simple piano chords and a driving drum beat while Willet calls himself a “red-blooded man” who’s unable to call upon his passion and emotion for inspiration. Contrary to this message, this song is full of passion. Perhaps, not to get too convoluted, it’s Willet’s passionate drive to find love and passion itself.

Track number two is worth noting. “Can We Hang On?” is a sweet, soulful tune that follows a progression that music fans will find familiar. Willet calls on nostalgia for this one as he thinks about the good old days. Introspective listeners may find themselves tearing up here. The first four tracks on the record are actually the most notable songs on the album. “So Tied Up” comes in at the three spot. Featuring British singer Bishop Briggs, this tune features Cold War staples like hand claps, drum-driven build ups and, of course, is catchy as all hell. Willet and Briggs released an absolutely chilling acoustic version on the band’s YouTube page. The album’s fourth track is “Restless.” This symphony of sweetness is nothing short of beautiful. The video follows various Los Angelinos, a Latino family, a 20-something couple and a group of young skaters, through a very pleasant day in their lives.

All in all, “LA Divine” is very much a Cold War Kids album. Devoted fans will be satisfied, that is if they’ve been on board from the very beginning.

LA Divine” is available on Apple Music April 7.
