Hannah’s Future Is Unwritten as Lena Dunham’s ‘Girls’ Comes to a Close

Mega-popular series “Girls has given its final bow on HBO and Hannah’s battle as a new mother explained many of the struggles she experienced throughout the life of the show.

Avid viewers who have tuned in to the series since its debut in 2012 were used to seeing Hannah (Lena Dunham) and her friends experience drama, relationships, and just life together. But things took an unexpected turn as Hannah’s life went into a direction during her early stages as a mother to her infant son, Grover.

It’s no surprise that Marnie (Allison Williams) was there through it all – from when Hannah was pregnant to when the finale fast-forwarded to Grover’s five-month pediatric checkup (whether Hannah wanted her to be there or not). The main storyline for the series finale surrounded Hannah’s inability to feed her child with breast milk. In fact, the title of the episode was “Latching.”

But anyone can look beyond the surface and see that it was about so much more than Hannah not being able to feed her newborn, especially when Marnie called Hannah’s mom in to try to save the day. Viewers found out so much more about the awkward mother-and-daughter relationship, as it brought clarity to Hannah’s reactions to other struggles throughout the show – whether it was not breastfeeding Grover or going through an ugly breakup with Adam.

Loreen (Becky Ann Baker) was introduced in the very first episode as the mother who was cutting off her daughter. This foretold the many struggles Hannah experienced when it came to letting go. Their relationship and how Hannah saw her mother filled the gaps of what fans wondered and questioned about Hannah in her own life; including why it was so difficult for her to put on her big girl pants and just grow up; after all, her friends have been moving along without her. But considering Hannah has been trying to keep close to her mother’s habits, personality, and just life in general, it’s safe to say she either wasn’t aware of or simply didn’t want to admit to this inner struggle she had been having all along.

Everything came to a head and proved to be too much for her in the series finale as she escaped her house and went MIA; leaving Marnie and Loreen with the child. Interestingly enough, this was a habit that Hannah often displayed for any guy in her life. It’s not surprising that this happened considering Hannah always had a problem with taking responsibility for her actions. Her mother even had to remind her that her son is a not a “temp job.” At this point, the only thing left to do was to make Hannah grow up and take care of her child whether she wanted to or not.

As for Hannah, she didn’t have to see Marnie and Loreen’s moment to reach her awakening. Instead, it was a teen she ran into that served as Hannah’s defining point in the finale. Hannah seeing a bratty teenager helped her to see how badly she was behaving herself. The proof that Hannah had finally evolved into an adult came when she returned home, Grover started crying, and Hannah insisted she can take care of him. So she does. Everything came full circle for Hannah and Loreen as they finally received the closure they needed. This was perfect timing for Hannah as a new mom and Loreen who just lost her husband. This marked a new beginning for Hannah as Grover even learned to latch before we said goodbye to them for good. Hannah officially reached her point of adulthood before the series ended.

Girls” season 6 finale aired April 16 on HBO. The entire series can be viewed via HBO Go, HBO Now, and On Demand.
