Pink Headlines ‘The Power of Pink’ Benefit Show at the House of Blues
Emily Manthei
Breast cancer fundraiser The Power of Pink is presenting an acoustic show by circus-pop shock girl P!nk and some as-yet-unnamed friends at the Sunset Strip’s House of Blues in West Hollywood on Oct. 23. An unpredictable and often acrobatic performer onstage, the acoustic show will give the young diva an excuse to showcase her powerful stage antics that audiences have a hard time forgetting.
P!nk started her career as a teenage member of girl-group Choice, who were signed in 1996 and recorded an album that subsequently remained unreleased. When the group disbanded she embarked on a solo career, which has proven much more fruitful. Her first release “There You Go” hit Billboard’s Top 10 in 2000 and launched a career that has seen P!nk rise to meteoric success, even becoming the second-most-played female artist in the United Kingdom (after Madonna) in the first decade of her career. Her “Lady Marmalade” cover from the 2001 Baz Luhrmann film Moulin Rouge! earned P!nk her first Grammy award and a number-one single, placing her more squarely in the pop-rock trajectory as her stardom continued to rise. As of 2014 she has sold more than 16 million records, been ranked #10 on VH1’s “Top 100 Women in Music” chart, and been awarded three Grammys; not bad for a 34-year-old.
A trailblazing trendsetter, P!nk describes her own style as something between hardcore-turned-gangster-turned-hippie, a descriptor that really defies explanation. Like her musical influences Madonna and Janis Joplin, she’s not afraid to project a strong, confident, unapologetically unique female perspective. Wild styles from crazy pink dreadlocks to full-arm and full-leg tattoos are characteristic of her ever-changing style. There is one note of consistency: P!nk supports many charitable causes; she is well-known as a supporter and spokeswoman for PETA, Save the Children, Take Back the Night, Human Rights Campaign and more. The proceeds of the Power of Pink fundraiser benefit the Margie Petersen Breast Center at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica.
Just recently, P!nk was featured in People magazine’s 2014 list of “Most Beautiful People,” where she can be seen in some acrobatic poses all her own. She is set to release a new collaboration LP with Dallas Green of City and Colour under the name of You + Me. The album, titled Rose Ave., will be available Oct. 14.
The Power of Pink will be performing at the House of Blues on Oct. 23. Tickets are available here.
