Rising Sensation Eriel Indigo on Her Musical Mission and 12-Part Episodic Series
Fusing together a myriad of genres, including hip-hop, EDM, new school trip hop, indie rock, 80s pop and angelic anthem, Eriel Indigo has landed on the scene with impressive footing. Her first single, “INNOCENCE” was launched in tandem with a music video, the first in what is to be a 12-part episodic music film series. The first two parts of the series are already gaining thousands of hits on YouTube, and shed light on her individuality and creativity.
Born and raised in the progressive oasis of Northern California’s Sierra Nevada foothills, amongst a population of outlaws and spiritual idealists, Indigo developed a unique artistic identity and enlightened mentality. After years of exploring the arts, she chose to concentrate her efforts toward music.
“I’ve been creating art in so many different mediums for such a long time. It took me a long time to really focus in on music, although I did always create music and my mother was a music maker. My whole family is very musically-oriented. I’ve always drawn and written and painted and acted and, kind-of, done all of the arts. Pretty much any art you can think of, I’ve done. But I would say in the last five years I really made a decision to choose a medium, and focus on it, in order to get something done.”
Despite her claims to have chosen music as her medium, her wide breadth of creative talent is employed in her video artistry, her choreography, and her eclectic style. Because of her ideology and her commitment to spirituality, she’s determined to advance without being coerced into the pressures of fitting into a “mold” within mainstream, popular music culture.
“The mainstream music industry is kind of dying. It’s holding on for dear life. But there are still a lot of good people working within it. Not everyone in the mainstream music machine are a bunch of sharks. There are amazing people in the independent music field and in the mainstream. But, yes, I definitely do have fear around major labels. I think, in the end, there will be a melding of both worlds because I don’t want to shut any of it out. I just want to make sure I’m not taken into a major label or some kind of machine, and not given the opportunity to say what I want to say. As much as I love the adoration, of course, and to receive recognition…it’s really a spiritual and creative mission for me.”
In light of her resistance to release creative control, it’s no surprise that one of her biggest influences is mainstream symbol Madonna who got her start with independent subsidiary of Warner Brothers, Sire Records. She was able to successfully preserve her personal causes while rising to fame. Eriel Indigo has learned from Madonna’s journey as a musician and artist, and is inspired by her ability to have maintained and translated her beliefs into her iconic style.
“Madonna was always pushing the boundaries and pissing people off, and being sacrilegious in this really kind of powerful, spiritual, divine, feminine way. I just always loved her rebel spirit and her embracing of sexuality in a way that I didn’t feel like was trashy, but really powerful. Her being adamant about sharing her art in a way that was appropriate for her and not backing down.”
Eriel Indigo also aims to have her songs serve as vessels for shocking statements concurrent with her individual opinions. She hopes to achieve the communication of her ideas through her projects of higher consciousness and raising the vibrational frequency of the Earth.
“My mission in music, and life, is to raise the vibrational frequency. And that just means…How can I say what that means (laughs)? I’m really just hoping to see a little hope for the human race, and in the world, and let people know that human nature isn’t violent and angry.”
Identifying as an Indigo child, meaning one who is ultra-sensitive to energy, empathetic, in touch with the world, Eriel has an authentic passion for spiritual healing, revolutionary thought, and a faith in human beings. To epitomize her mentality, Indigo weaves intricate lyrics with complex, exploratory music to provoke audiences into altering their perspectives.
“We are all connected, especially on earth. Everything is connected. We breathe the trees’ air and they breathe our air. And people seem to be in complete denial of our total connectedness to each other, and to nature, and everything. It’s hard to explain this to someone who has no concept of that, but it seems more and more people are coming into awareness of it. So that’s kind of my personal, professional and spiritual goal. Using those vibrations to bring people back into the light.”
