The Pop Group Brings Over 30 Years of Rock Legacy to Echoplex
Formed almost 40 years ago, The Pop Group is bringing their post-punk legacy to the Echoplex on March 10.
Young boys looking for something to do, the original members of the group got together back in 1977 when they were still in high school. Their sound, an array of influences that came from Miles Davis to King Tubby to the growing punk scene. All of that mixed with Mark Stewart’s lyrics gave them an avant-garde style that set them apart from the pack. Various members came and went, a few albums were released, and several singles were released before they called it quits in 1981.
The guys didn’t sit still though. They went on to stay in the music realm, joining other bands like Pigbag, Head, Neneh Cherry and more. Then fans got a shock when The Pop Group announced they were reuniting and recording new material in 2010. Rock and roll, one just never knows what to expect. Stewart said of the reunion shows then, “There was a lot left undone,….we were so young and volatile…Let’s face it, things are probably even more fucked now than they were in the early 80’s…and we are even more fucked off!”
It took some time for The Pop Group to get back into the swing of things when it came time to record after the reunion. Four years after, they released not one but two records, “Cabinet of Curiosities” and “We Are Time.” Now they’re still going strong and have 2015’s “Citizen Zombie.” So fans will have a healthy mix of new and old when it comes time to head out and see the show where they’ll be sharing the stage with Peaking Lights, Sex Stains, DJ Michael Stock (Part Time Punks), as well as performing their latest single, “Mad Truth.”
Their Echoplex show is actually the kick off date for their US run. Before they come stateside, they’ll be around the globe in Japan and down under in Australia. After a short time in the states, The Pop Group will take their show to the UK and wrap up their touring in mid-May.
