MØ Hits The Roxy with Serious Electro-Pop
Stephanie Hernandez
Danish singer and songwriter Karen Marie Ørsted is better known by her moniker, MØ. Relatively new to the music scene in the States, this one-woman show is already garnering comparisons to artists like Grimes and Twin Shadow. MØ is currently on tour in promotion of her debut album, “Mythologies to Follow” and will be making a stop at The Roxy April 14.
Originally one half of the punk duo MOR, MØ has been making music since early 2007. After MOR’s disbanding in 2012, MØ began creating her own a cappella pop songs and in January 2013 released her debut single “Glass.” Later that same year she co-wrote and provided vocals for Avicii’s song, “Dear Boy” featured on his debut album “True.” MØ’s contribution caught the ears of Australian rapper, Iggy Azalea, who then featured the singer on her track “Beg For it.” Critical attention surrounded the artist’s 2014 debut, “Mythologies to Follow,” winning MØ “Breakthrough Artist of the year,” “Record of the Year,” “Solo Artist of the Year” and “Music Video of the Year” at the 2014 Danish Music Awards. Finally making her way to American soil later that year, MØ made her US television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! followed by a performance alongside Azalea on Saturday Night Live. With enough momentum and positive attention surrounding MØ, she was able to announce a full blown North American tour.
The buzz around MØ is well deserved; her unique brand of electro-pop has gone from simply being a featured part on other’s tracks to having enough power to stand as a full blown solo act. The raw energy exuded by her debut album is reason enough to get out and see this Dane live. If MØ can go from just singing verses to getting Diplo’s stamp of approval in less than a year, we’re excited to see what she can do on stage and you should be too.
Find some sonic bliss with MØ at The Roxy April 14. Tickets available here.
