Kimbra and Mikky Ekko Give a Passionate Show at The El Rey

New Zealand recording artist, Kimbra, has been making waves in her home country since her debut album, “Vows,” but did not gain international fame until she was featured in the chart topping song, “Somebody That I Used to Know” by Gotye in 2011. Her sophomore effort, “The Golden Echo” was released in 2014 to critical acclaim and has taken her from relatively unknown to full-blown superstar. Today this Grammy award-winning performer is on tour with the extremely talented Mikky Ekko and the two were gracious enough to bring their show to The El Rey Theatre April 9.

Taking the stage at 8 p.m., you could tell Mikky Ekko had something to say. With the recent release of his debut LP “Time,” a tour with both Kimbra and Broods, it is no wonder he was pumped and ready to go straight out of the gate. Ekko’s perchance for great storytelling was anchored by his superb vocals and commanding stage presence.  Slowing his set down with his most well known penned song, “Stay,” the audience fell into what can best be described as a melancholy trance. Singing along with Ekko, it was clear everyone in attendance had the lyrics ingrained in their minds. Kimbra stepped onto the stage just over an hour later with her usual theatrical gusto. Glittering under the red and blue lighting, her silver and gold plated dress caught the eye and reflected a sort of purple haze over the stage.  Quickly grabbing the audience’s full attention, Kimbra burst though tracks like “Come into my Head,” “Madhouse” and “Miracle” with an uplifting, almost 1970’s dance club energy. Repeatedly kneeling to touch fans and taking time to have some sassy banter with the audience, the show was as interactive as it was entertaining.

Kimbra has kept true to her art from day one. Her passion lit up the stage and paired well with Ekko’s captivating artistic integrity.  According to a live interview conducted with Jason Bentley following her performance at this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, the Sold out El Rey show was the best concert she has ever played. We agree, well done Kimbra, glad we could be a part of that truly remarkable evening.
