Ingrid Michaelson’s Summer Night Comes to Greek Theatre
MySpace was still a dominating force when Ingrid Michaelson hit the scene. She continuously charted on the now lackluster site’s charts thanks to a simple yet haunting single that made her an indie darling. She had a geek chic look matching up with her quirky sound that resonated with those who were looking for some substance to pop music. Almost a decade later Ingrid’s still beating down her own path and picking up new fans all the while.
While most four-years-olds are working up the courage to head to kindergarten, Ingrid was taking up piano. Showing an interest in music early, she mastered her skills for three years at Manhattan’s Third Street Music School. In high school, she worked on her natural instrument with a vocal coach and by the time she made it to college, she was in a co-ed a cappella group. “Pitch Perfect 2” could have used her, right?
While the big screen hasn’t picked her up yet, the small screen came knocking early in her career. Her 2005 debut didn’t manage to make any noise, but her sophomore release did. 2006’s “Girls and Boys” put her on the map. Not only did MySpace take notice, but TV producers did as well. One that worked for “Grey’s Anatomy” found her online and approached her. From there, her single “The Way I Am” became a smash after it was featured in an Old Navy commercial. She went from an indie artist to a household name within a year and in the years since has proven to be more than a one-hit wonder.
It’s been almost 10 years since she made her mark on the music scene, and since then she’s released four more records. Last year’s “Lights Out” did very well. It was in the top 10 on multiple charts and hit number one on the US Indie thanks to its initial single, “Girls Chase Boys.” Now a setlist staple, its simplistic hook made it one of the most played songs of 2014. Now she’s hoping to have a repeat hit with her current single, “Time Machine.”
Ingrid Michaelson has always toured with the best and her Summer Night Out tour is no different. She’ll be with Jukebox the Ghost and Greg Holden. DC’s Jukebox is an indie rock outlet who’ll capture the crowd with “Made for Ending,” while Greg’s folk ways will delight – especially his “Hold On Tight.”
Ingrid Michaelson‘s A Summer Night Out hits the Greek Theatre on June 11. Tickets can be purchased here.
