‘Jurassic World’ to Have a Monstrous Weekend

One of life’s biggest mysteries has to be dinosaurs. Yes, there is scientific evidence about them, but no one was around when they roamed the earth and no one really knows how they came to be extinct. Then in 1993, a movie brought the gigantic creatures to life in a way audiences had never experienced before. Over 20 years later, “Jurassic Park” still impresses. While the sequels didn’t fare as well as the first, there are high hopes for this year’s “Jurassic World.”

Set 22 years after the events of the initial movie, this one picks up with the dinosaur park no longer being a threat, at least that’s what attendees think. It’s a prehistoric Disneyland as far as they’re concerned. That is until one of the genetically modified giants goes on a rampage that leaves everyone scrambling. Everyone except Chris Pratt. Still flying high off the success of “Guardians of the Galaxy,” this once-upon-a-time TV funnyman has traded his primetime slot for the leading role in what promises to be one of this year’s dominant box office hits.

Pratt obviously leads the cast that’s sprinkled with fellow small screen turned big screen acts like “Arrested Development’s” Judy Greer, “New Girl’s” Jake Johnson and “Melissa & Joey’s” Nick Robinson. These three, along with Pratt, come from hilarious shows, so it will be interesting to see if they were allowed to bring any of that humor to a world where a crazed dinosaur is on the loose.

The initial trailer for “Jurassic World” looked like something the SyFy Channel would release to coincide with “Sharknado,” but the second one proved that this wasn’t a movie destined to tank. A great cast paired with an intense and thrilling plot that’s masked with nostalgia and this movie won’t disappoint in the end. Plus, at the helm in director Colin Trevorrow. This is his first major blockbuster, but if all goes well, it won’t be his last. Some may know him as the man behind 2012’s “Safety Not Guaranteed,” which starred Johnson and Pratt’s onscreen love Aubrey Plaza.

With movies like “Furious 7” and “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” already holding steady as the major players of 2015, it will be interesting to see how moviegoers enjoy dinosaurs once the film hits theaters.

Jurassic World” opens everywhere June 12.
