Hot Chip Turned Greek Theatre Into an All-Out Dance Party
Stephanie Hernandez
The English electronic dance duo known as Hot Chip, has been making the rounds stateside this summer. Known for their ability to turn even the most conservative of venues into all out sweaty, pulsating dance floors, these two know how to get the party started. With a new album to share with the masses, Hot Chip walked onto the stage at the Greek Theatre with one goal in mind, to get the crowd moving.
Forming back in 2000, Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard have had the past 15 years in Cambridge clubs, festival stages and stadiums to perfect their craft. From the beat heavy grooves of their 2004 debut “Coming on Strong” to the infectious melodics on this year’s “Why Make Sense,” the duo have been at the forefront of electronic music and helped shape the way we view the genre today. With six albums of material under their belts and insanely attuned improvisational skills, Hot Chip fans knew they were in for a show. Opening their twelve-song set with “Huarache Lights,” the first track off their latest album, the crowd was instantly brought to their feet and the party had begun. Mixing old and new material seamlessly, the group continued on with “One Night Stand” and “Started Right” before getting into the fan favorite, “Over and Over.” Ending their initial set with an energetic rendition of “I Feel Better,” the last notes of the track hadn’t faded out before the crowd was already begging for more. Stepping off the stage for only a few moments, Hot Chip returned to the stage to bust out the first of their five-song encore “Look at Where We Are.” Fading directly into their infamously good “And I Was a Boy From School,” the boys decided to throw the crowd a curve ball by delving into a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark.” After creating rock and electronic fusion, Hot chip brought the night back to EDM and ended the evening with another cover, this time with fellow dance floor gods LCD Soundsystem’s track “All My Friends.”
Hot, smiling faces and aching feet were all that was left exiting the venue, a sign of a job well done, expectations met and a night worth retelling over and over again.
