After briefly being closed for installation, the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City has reopened and will be showing “Joanne Nam: Hiatus.” The exhibit will kick off on Oct. 10 with an opening reception at the gallery from 6-9 p.m.
Originally from Korea, Joanne Nam currently calls Los Angeles home. She recently graduated from the Art Center College of Design with a B.F.A. in illustration. A fan of horror films, Nam is known for her paintings of softly colored girls posed awkwardly. Her work has been called a blend of realism and surrealism.
Nam Says, “I mainly use oil paints when I create images. Most of subject matters of my paintings are from old memories. I used to live in a middle of forest and spent a lot of my time with wild trees and animals when I was young. However, I avoided reproducing simple images of those memories. The thing I was focusing on was the impression of them. The visual images in my head were vague and hard to tell, but I believed that the feeling of it was the thing that lasts.”
“Joanne Nam: Hiatus” will be on view at Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City Oct. 10-31.
