John Mulaney Returns With Stand-Up Special ‘The Comeback Kid’

After some hard luck in TV, John Mulaney will premiere his new stand-up special, “The Comeback Kid,” which will be available for Netflix streaming starting the following day. The aptly titled special supposedly refers to his most recent endeavor, his own self-titled TV show called “Mulaney,” that had trouble getting off the ground and, after flailing to find solid ground among networks and critics, was eventually canceled earlier this year.

Mulaney” was originally a pilot taped for NBC but when NBC decided not to pick it up, Mulaney took a tweaked version of that pilot to Fox, where it was picked up for a six episode season one. And although Fox eventually ordered 10 more episodes, the show was canceled after only 13 episodes aired. The show was mainly critiqued for its strong similarities to “Seinfeld,” which were seen as crutches rather than pillars to the show’s success.

But Mulaney is no stranger to success. He was brought on as a writer for “Saturday Night Live” in August of 2008, and has since been responsible for a slew of popular sketches and characters, including the creation of SNL character Stefon. He’s also released a comedy album entitled “The Top Part” (2009) and a Netflix special titled “New In Town” (2012). “The Comeback Kid” will be the third stand-up special released by Mulaney, and the second consecutive special he’s released on Netflix.

The premiere at the Largo will not only feature a screening of the special, but will also feature live stand-up sets and a musical guest.

The screening of Mulaney’s “The Comeback Kid” will show at the Largo on Nov. 12. Tickets can be purchased here.
