The Wiltern Gets a Pop Punk Explosion With New Found Glory and Yellowcard
Around the time boy bands and pop princesses were starting to fade on the likes of MTV’s “Total Request Live,” a new wave of rock bands started to emerge. They were unlike the ones scaring parents and far from Korn and Limp Bizkit, these were groups like New Found Glory and Yellowcard. One is a throwback to the days of Green Day; the other a band fronted by a young man who could crossover to pop if he wanted. Over the years both bands have had their fair share of success headlining their respective tours around the world and owning it at Warped Tour but this fall they’ve decided to team up and head out for a co-headlining tour that brings their fans together.
New Found Glory, otherwise known as NFG have been together since the late ’90s, when they started opening for pop punk heavy hitters like MxPx. Their self-titled record in 2000 made some noise, but it wasn’t until a couple years later with “Sticks and Stones” that they saw the height of their career. MTV started to take notice thanks to the infectious “My Friends Over You,” which remains their set closer all these years later. Since then they’ve dropped a handful of records, done countless tours and have remained on top of their game all the while, even with their latest, 2014’s “Resurrection.” This is the first album they recorded as a foursome since parting ways with their longtime guitarist in 2013.
While NFG brings the punk Yellowcard brings the pop. They too formed in ’97 but didn’t find their mainstream success until that infectious song and album by the same name dropped in 2003. “Ocean Avenue” was everywhere that year, and helped them ride high for a couple years after appearing on the “Spider-Man 2” soundtrack and performing on the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards. Yellowcard continued to rise but then hit a wall and their hiatus began in 2008. Luckily their fans didn’t have to wait too long and just two years later they were back and better than ever.
Both bands have been able to keep their fan base from all those years go, and continue to gain new ones by remaining masters of the stage. On stage, New Found Glory commands the crowd like an explosion of firecrackers. Energy is key to their performances as well as delivering a set that’s well balanced and highlights tracks from every record. Yellowcard do it up by being tried and true rock stars lead by singer Ryan Key with his vocals for days that put everyone under his spell.
New Found Glory and Yellowcard play The Wiltern Nov. 11. Tickets can be purchased here.
