Tarantino’s ‘The Hateful Eight’ Rides Into Theaters

Quentin Tarantino’s long-awaited film, “The Hateful Eight,” shot on 70mm, hits theaters on Christmas day and comes with a slew of history all its own. In late 2013, the two-time Oscar winner had announced that he was working on an original Western, but the film almost didn’t happen. Gawker leaked the script online shortly after Tarantino had showed it to a few actors he was considering for the lead roles. He decided to bring legal action against the online news site and subsequently canceled the film entirely, saying that he would adapt the story into a novel instead.

However, after a live reading of the newly revised script, Tarantino announced that he had changed his mind and would continue moving forward with the production of the film. “The Hateful Eight” script had gone through some major changes and features an entirely new ending so that even those who might have read the leaked version will be in for a surprise when it debuts on the big screen.

The film is a post-Civil War murder mystery set in a single room somewhere in Wyoming amid its vast plains and treacherous mountains. John “The Hangman” Ruth (Kurt Russell) seeks shelter for himself and his captive (Jennifer Jason Leigh) from an impending blizzard only to find that within that refuge are Major Marquis Warren, “The Bounty Hunter” (Samuel L. Jackson); Oswaldo Mobray, “The Little Man” (Tim Roth); Joe Gage, “The Cow Puncher” (Michael Madsen); Chris Mannix, “The Sheriff” (Walton Goggins) and Bob “The Mexican” (Demian Bichir), and no man can be trusted. Tarantino has worked with Jackson, Russell, Roth and Madsen several times on hit movies like “Kill Bill” Volumes 1 and 2 and the cult classics “Pulp Fiction” and “Reservoir Dogs.”
