Don Rickles Brings Years of Comedic Expertise to Saban Theater

Don Rickles got his start as a standup comic in Miami at a nightclub but when Frank Sinatra became the butt of one of Rickles’ infamous comedic taunts, Sinatra began to encourage other celebrities to see Rickles’ act, be insulted by him, and have a good laugh, too.

Don Rickles has made insults his trademark, being nicknamed “The Merchant of Venom” and “Mr. Warmth,” for his offensive style on stage.  After Sinatra’s pseudo-endorsement, Rickles received widespread exposure, appearing in small television and film roles, in works such as “Get Smart” and “X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes.”

Throughout the 60s, he performed in film and television, and in 1965, he debuted on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.” He became a staple of “The Tonight Show” in the Carson era, making over 100 appearances as either a guest or a guest host, showcasing his style of comedic quips on national television. At this time, he also became a regular on “The Dean Martin Show” almost always appearing on the “Dean Martin Celebrity Roast” specials.

In the 80s and 90s, Rickles returned to the Vegas and comedy show circuit, and performed at Ronald Reagan’s Second Inaugural Ball where he was asked specifically by Frank Sinatra to perform alongside the beloved singer.

As of late, Rickles remains a busy man.He won an Emmy for “Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program” in 2008 and reprised his role as the voice of Mr. Potato Head in both Toy Story Midway Mania! attraction at Disneyland’s California Adventure as well as the film “Toy Story 3.”  Even today, he is still a frequent guest of late night talk shows, including “Late Show with David Letterman,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.”

Don Rickles will perform at the Saban Theatre on Jan. 30. Tickets can be purchased here.
