Jenny Lewis to Play L.A. in Celebration of ‘Rabbit Fur Coat’ 10-Year Anniversary
Jordan Bailey
As an artist who’s been performing both in front of the camera and on stage for nearly her entire life, Jenny Lewis has reached a point where she’s able to look back on her accomplishments with reverence. As the 10th anniversary of her highly acclaimed semi-solo album “Rabbit Fur Coat” approaches, Lewis has decided to commemorate the achievement with back-to-back shows at one of Los Angeles’ most beautiful churches.
The Immanuel Presbyterian Church will host Lewis for two nights with special guests The Watson Twins, who were featured on the original album, and heavyweight singer-songwriter M. Ward. “Rabbit Fur Coat” was originally released in January of 2006 and featured one particularly notable cover of Traveling Wilburys’ “Handle with Care.” The Traveling Wilburys were a reputable super group from the 1980s consisting of George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan. Lewis managed to match the star power on her version with today’s folk elites like Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie, Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes and M. Ward. “Rabbit Fur Coat” is tinged with the nostalgia of bluegrass, spattered with notes of folk-rock and topped with Lewis’ penchant for excellent songwriting and storytelling.
Lewis’ musical experience goes back to 1998 as one of the founding members of country-indie-rock band Rilo Kiley. She left that behind to pursue a solo career, which eventually spawned the aforementioned “Rabbit Fur Coat.” In 2014, she released “The Voyager,” produced by rock legend, Ryan Adams. The album was five years in the making and was meant as a reflection on her time with Rilo Kiley. Her self-directed video for the hit track “Just One of the Guys” was released by GQ Magazine and featured the likes of actresses Anne Hathaway, Kristen Stewart and Brie Larson. Lewis has no shortage of very talented friends in high places. Alongside her record collaborations, she can be seen in the recently released Netflix special “A Very Murray Christmas” singing, among other things, a duet of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” with Murray himself.
Jenny Lewis is set to perform Jan. 29 and 30 at the Immanuel Presbyterian Church. See ticket information here.
