Woody Guthrie, Wolfmother and SXSW Homegrown Spotlight GRAMMY Museum in March
This March, the GRAMMY Museum has a little something for everyone. They’ll be celebrating Woody Guthrie, rocking out with Wolfmother, spotlighting a songwriting duo’s 25 years of penning music for everyone from Whitney to Barbra, showing a film that features a record breaker, reuniting a band of brothers and so much more.
Woody Guthrie L.A. 1937 to 1941 | March 1
William Deverell and Darryl Holter are historians who teamed up to pen “Woody Guthrie L.A. 1937 to 1941” and they will both be in the building to talk with GRAMMY Museum Executive Director Bob Santelli about the influence of Woody Guthrie. They’ll dive into the pages of their book that details Guthrie’s pivotal four years in L.A. The conversation will be capped off by a performance from Holter. This event is free for members and only $10 for non-members.
El Camino Más Largo | March 7
Six years ago, Enrique Bunbury became the first Spanish solo artist to play in front of a crowd as big as 90,000 in Latin America in a night. The sold-out crowd at Mexico’s Azteca Stadium inspired him to take his show on the road to North America. He played in some unique places along the way and in “El Camino Más Largo” director Alexis Morante takes audiences along on this tour and Bunbury’s journey.
Celebrating 25 Years of Songwriting: Allan Rich & Jud Friedman | March 10
Looking at the list of songs Allan Rich and Jud Friedman have written, it’s safe to say music would not be the same without them. Their career has spanned a quarter of a century so far and in that time they’ve managed to work with everyone from the late, greats Whitney Houston and Ray Charles, as well as N’SYNC and Barbra Streisand. Rich and Friedman will be together at the museum to talk about their careers, perform and even welcome special guests. This is a members-only event. SXSW Homegrown: Los Angeles 2016 | March 18
For those who can’t make it out to the annual festivities in Austin, the Grammy Museum is making sure that Angelenos don’t miss out. This year, they’re highlighting six local bands they feel deserve the attention. They’ll have Strangers You Know, Phases, Grizfolk, Swimm, The New Regime and Kitten. The fun kicks off at 8 p.m. and badges for the event can be picked up here.
Le Butcherettes | March 21
This garage-punk duo started out in 2007 and have since been a notable act thanks to their intense live shows that have taken them from the underground scene to the mainstream. Starting in Mexico and then moving the show to Texas, Teri Gender Bender has been compared to legends in rock like Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs’ Karen O as well as Patti Smith. Her demeanor has made her a notable lead singer and has led Le Butcherettes to tour with everyone from Mars Volta to Iggy Pop. Currently, the band is supporting At The Drive-In in concert and will be stopping by the GRAMMY Museum to discuss their career as well as performing for a lucky, intimate crowd.
The Chambers Brothers | March 22
Everyone loves a story about overcoming the odds and that’s why people have always loved hearing about The Chamber Brothers. Growing up in the south during the 40s, they found solace in song and when their family finally made the life-changing move to Los Angeles in the 50s, they took full advantage of their new surroundings. Join them for a special reunion where they’ll perform and talk about their music and influence with Bob Santelli.
Chasing Destiny with Kelly Rowland | March 23
She was a third of one of the most successful girl groups in recent years. Kelly Rowland will forever be known as a member of Destiny’s Child alongside Michelle Williams and of course, Beyoncé, but she managed to have a career all on her own when it was time to fly solo. Fans can join her as she talks not only about her upcoming BET series “Chasing Destiny,” but her music career and what she thinks it takes to pop as a girl group in today’s landscape.
Wolfmother | March 24
This event was scheduled for February around the time Wolfmother was due to drop their latest album “Victorious.” Plans had to change but the event remains the same. The GRAMMY-winning rockers will be taking over the Clive Davis Theater to talk about their new album and give fans a very special performance.
Il Volo | March 28
The Italian tenor vocal trio appeared on and won “Ti Lascio una Canzone” back in 2009 and since then have been a crossover hit around the world. Since then, they’ve been featured on “American Idol” as well as “Entourage” and now they’re coming to the Museum for a conversation with the Vice President of the GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares Scott Goldman, along with a special performance.
