Diana Ross Heads to the Hollywood Bowl for Two Nights

There are few singers in the world as iconic as the incomparable Diana Ross. She has been active for over five decades, getting her start with the seminal R&B label Motown Records. As the lead singer of The Supremes, she achieved an incredible amount of success. Over a period of fewer than three years during the mid-’60s, the girl group scored 10 number-one hit singles in the United States. Soon after, their name was changed to Diana Ross & The Supremes to highlight their virtuosic lead vocalist. While she flirted with a solo career for much of the decade, it wasn’t until ‘70 that she would officially strike out on her own.

That year saw the release of “Diana Ross,” which contained two of her most universally recognized hits, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “Reach Out and Touch (Somebody’s Hand).” As the years passed, Ross continually evolved her sound to remain relevant to current musical trends. And toward the late ‘70s, she began to record disco and dance music, releasing “Love Hangover” and “The Boss.” Ten years after her solo debut, 1980’s “diana” marked the most successful album of her career. With music composed by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of Chic, the record spawned mega-hits like “I’m Coming Out” and “Upside Down.”

The singer left Motown Records after discovering how little money she was actually entitled to from the label, despite the fact that she had made millions with them. RCA Records came calling with a multimillion dollar recording contract – the most lucrative in the history of music up to that point. She rewarded the label with hits “Mirror Mirror” and her cover of “Why Do Fools Fall in Love.” Recently, Ross has been focused on touring behind her deep music legacy with her “More Today Than Yesterday: The Greatest Hits Tour” coming six years ago. Her “In the Name of Love Tour” from ‘13 resumed this year.
