Jessica Brown Findlay and Tom Wilkinson Shine Brightly in ‘This Beautiful Fantastic’

Fans of the popular series “Downton Abbey” might right recognize a familiar face in Simon Aboud’s whimsical comedy “This Beautiful Fantastic.” Jessica Brown Findlay, best known for her role as Lady Sybil, takes on the role of Bella Brown. Bella, a budding children’s book author, handles her life and her daily encounters with peculiar care.

The synopsis of the film is as follows: Bella Brown is a beautiful young woman who spends her life living in her own fantasy world of quirky compulsions, dreaming of writing and illustrating successful children’s books. When she is forced by her landlord to deal with her neglected garden or face eviction, she meets her nemesis, match and mentor in Alfie Stephenson (Tom Wilkinson) – a grumpy, loveless, rich old man who lives next door and also happens to be an amazing horticulturist.

The beginning of the film details Bella’s past and how she came to be in the heart of London. Although she has been dealt some pretty tough cards in life – including a stint being raised by ducks before being discovered by an elderly gentleman wearing only underwear – she enters the foster system. It is in her new home that she learns to conduct her life chronologically.

Starry-eyed romantics will identify with the fairy tale element, once a promising garden is introduced. Aboud has incorporated elements of a picturesque love story that includes animals interacting with humans, an unexpected romance, a damsel in distress, and a dream-chasing heroine.

The adorable Tom Wilkinson delivers a solid performance as the loony neighbor but still manages to exude a sense of charisma that is immediately likable on-screen. Brown takes a break from her bold and daring role in “Downton Abbey” and delivers a fresh character that approaches everyday doldrums with an enchanting approach. The interaction between the two characters is executed flawlessly, with gardening being its unlikely crutch.

The film could benefit from a less predictable ending. Elements of surprise could help with both the character and plot development. Still, Aboud weaves a story of modern-day romance into a whimsical hour-and-a-half that’s easy on the eyes. The film also stars Jeremy Irvine as a possible love interest, Andrew Scott, Anna Chancelor, and Sheila Hancock.

The Beautiful Fantastic” releases in theaters March 10.
