Jonathan Kite Of ‘2 Broke Girls’ Brings the Funny to Flappers
“It makes you feel alive,” is what Jonathan Kite told Associated Press about stand-up. While he’s an actor on a hit series, funny people usually find their voice on a stage in front of a live audience. Men like Ray Romano, Jerry Seinfeld and Martin Lawrence all had sitcoms but when they weren’t filming found time to go back to the comedy clubs, even after they landed in syndication. Kite’s show is still kicking, but when he’s not working for CBS, he’s building his stand-up chops with two shows in Burbank.
Kite got his start as hacky sack playing hippie on Jimmy Kimmel Live! back in 2003. After that he landed on the big screen in the box office smash “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” as a pirate on Johnny Depp’s ship. The years that followed were full of one-off appearances on Disney shows and “Raising Hope.” It wasn’t until 2011 that he scored big with “2 Broke Girls.” A show targeted towards millennials starring Kat Dennings delivering sarcastic one-liners and Beth Behrs proving physical comedy is not dead, Kite plays off the girls as their perverted Ukrainian fry cook Oleg. Those who only know him from the show will be surprised to know – that accent is all an act.
While his accent as Oleg isn’t real, it goes to show how great he is with impressions – which is where a lot of his act lies. Earlier this year he appeared on “Today” with Kathie Lee and Hoda and showed off just a handful of the hundred or so celebrity impersonations he can do. Obama was easy to recognize, as were Matthew McConaughey and Vince Vaughn. He can also bust out Jeff Bridges, Tom Hanks, Liam Neeson and many more that may make the act when he heads to Flappers for two shows in November.
Kite’s shows will be just a week after “2 Broke Girls” comes back for its fifth season on CBS. This season promises to be as hilarious as the rest with the girls trying to save their cupcake shop, a possible pregnancy for Oleg’s fiance played by Jennifer Coolidge and a Barbra Streisand impersonator. It comes back November 12, making the move from Monday nights to join “The Big Bang Theory” and “Mom” on Thursday nights.
Jonathan Kite plays Flappers Nov. 20 and 21. Tickets can be purchased here.
