John Waters to Perform at Luckman Fine Arts Complex at Cal State LA

Cult hero and “philosopher of filth” John Waters is returning to the stage with an updated version of his one-man show “This Filthy World: Dirtier & Filthier.” In 2006, he debuted “This Filthy World,” a one-man tour where the beloved cult director enlightens audiences on his influences, rise to fame and journey through the Hollywood landscape. The show, which is currently streaming on Netflix, was filmed as a special and directed by Jeff Garlin.

In the original special, Waters walked the audiences through his life, starting as a child in Maryland who worshiped the evil holy trinity, a trinity consisting of the Wicked Witch of the West, Patty McCormack as Rhoda in “The Bad Seed,” and Captain Hook. Waters talked about his career and his relationship with “The Dreamlanders,” his acting troupe that included Divine and Mink Stole. He told the audience about his philosophy of purposeful bad taste to offend an uptight society.

When he takes the stage at Luckman Waters will likely discuss his latest projects such as his art exhibitions and his project hitchhiking across America, which he documented in his 2014 book “Carsick.” Waters’ irreverent show is sure to touch on current events like last year’s decision to allow same-sex marriage nationwide and the latest news scandals.

Waters’ career spans five decades, starting with independent films such as “Pink Flamingos” and “Female Trouble.” His early work confounded the line between trash and high art and shocked audiences in the 70s by incorporating explicit images and depictions of neglected parts of society.

In the 80s Waters entered Hollywood with films like “Polyester” and found mainstream success with “Hairspray,” “Cry-Baby” and “Serial Mom.” However, he recalls accidentally making a PG-rated film with “Hairspray,” although he later embraced it as his biggest hit. “Hairspray” later went on to became a Broadway hit and spawned a 2007 musical film. Although Waters has not made a film since 2004, he continues to be active as an actor, artist, activist and author.

John Water’s “This Filthy World: Dirtier & Filthier” will take over Luckman Fine Arts Complex at Cal State LA on Feb. 13. Tickets are available at the Luckman Box Office and Ticketmaster.
