Melanie Martinez Takes ‘Cry Baby Tour’ to The Theatre at Ace Hotel
With so many seasons of shows like “American Idol” and “The Voice” it’s hard to recall each contestant and often times many are left by the wayside as they wait to be included in a “Where Are They Now?” episode. Thankfully, that’s not the case for Melanie Martinez. Her look made her memorable but it was her voice that has allowed her career to flourish. In the years that followed her television debut, she’s dropped an album and toured the world and now her Cry Baby Tour is heading back around to the United States for round two.
Not even old enough to legally enter a bar yet, Martinez was just a kid when she worked with Adam Levine back in 2012 on “The Voice.” During the show, anyone could see that she was different from the usual contestants. She wasn’t about the power ballad moments made famous by the likes of Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson, nor was she just another guy with a guitar. Martinez had a way of transforming well-known pop songs into sound bites one could expect to hear in an artsy horror flick. Her renditions of Alex Clare’s “Too Close” as well as The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army” landed in the top 10 on iTunes. Once the show was over, though, it was time for this young star to continue to rise on her own, and rise she did.
She dropped “Cry Baby” in the summer of 2015 and it managed to break the top 10 ranks on the Billboard charts and even reached number one on the Alternative Albums chart. It was partly thanks to the following she’d gained during “The Voice,” but she continued to gain admirers thanks to the trail of singles led by “Pity Party ” and “Soap.” Martinez has always had a unique look, but her videos heightened that. Her dark pop meets childlike charm was eerie in a way but it worked for her and her millions of fans. With that, her stage show is interesting, to say the least. On her last Cry Baby Tour run she bottle fed a man on a stage with giant alphabet blocks as the decor.
Melanie Martinez plays The Theatre at Ace Hotel Feb. 26. Tickets can be purchased here.
