Rags-To-Riches Musical ’42nd Street’ Returns to Hollywood Pantages
John Turner
“You’re going out there a youngster, but you’ve got to come back a star!” More than any other in the show, that single line encapsulates the exhilarating, stars-in-your-eyes spirit of “42nd Street,” the smash Broadway musical that has surely vaulted the hopes and dreams of many a chorus girl or guy. And soon, L.A. theatergoers will have the chance to feel that contagious spirit for themselves when its performances come to Hollywood Pantages Theatre from May 31 to June 19. This touring production of the dance-heavy musical, which has been performed over 5,000 times on Broadway alone, is directed by co-author of the original script Mark Bramble and choreographed by Randy Skinner who choreographed the 2001 “42nd Street” Broadway revival.
When it originally premiered on Broadway in August 1980, the production of “42nd Street” was rife with drama. The director and choreographer, the legendary Gower Champion, was diagnosed with cancer shortly before rehearsals began; after the rousing curtain calls at the end of the show’s August 25 opening, the show’s producer rushed onstage to inform the audience, cast and crew that Champion had died that morning. Even so, the show went on to become an overwhelming success and the original production ran on Broadway for nine years with the 2001 revival running for another three. Many of its songs including “Lullaby of Broadway,” “Dames” and “We’re In the Money” have become staples of the American musical theater canon. The story centers around song-and-dance newcomer Peggy Sawyer who becomes a chorus girl in “1933’s newest and biggest hit” musical, “Pretty Lady.” When the show’s star Dorothy Brock breaks her ankle and is unable to perform, the director asks Peggy to step into the leading role. But can she handle being instantly thrust into the spotlight?
In addition to director Bramble and choreographer Skinner, the “42nd Street” touring production stars Caitlin Ehlinger as Peggy, Kaitlin Lawrence as Dorothy and Matthew J. Taylor as “Pretty Lady” director Julian Marsh.
“42nd Street has performances May 31 – June 19 at Hollywood Pantages Theatre. For information and tickets, visit the Pantages’ event page.
