‘The Unauthorized Musical Parody of Scream!’ Kills at Rockwell

A movie franchise can’t truly be a cult classic until it has a popular (or flopular) musical stage adaptation in its anthology, right? So, don’t fear “Scream” fans, “The Unauthorized Musical Parody of Scream!” is back again and live at Rockwell Table and Stage starting Oct. 8.

The Los Feliz venue is already known for bringing popular films from screen to stage. Rockwell previously provided a home for the popular For the Record series, which creates intimate, full-length musical extravaganzas from the soundtracks of films of famous auteurs: Baz Luhrmann, The Coen Brothers, and Quentin Tarantino are just a few examples.

“Scream!” was the first installment in what became Rockwell’s successful “Unauthorized Musical Parody” series. With a stacked creative team and star-studded cast, the show garnered rave reviews the first time around. The musical is written and directed by Michael Gans and Richard Register, who both have long bios of their own, with credits spanning television to Broadway.

The “Scream” film franchise grossed over $600 million at the box office from its 1996 inception through its fourth installment in 2011 and remains the highest grossing slasher film series in the U.S. to date. Its popularity is due, in part, to the franchise’s acute self-awareness. The “Scream” quadrilogy secured its place in clichéd cult horror genre thanks to a perfect blend of violence and laugh-out-loud humor. “The Unauthorized Musical Parody of Scream!”, on the other hand, is billed as such: “A hyperbolic retelling ups the ante from the camp of the original with live on-stage blood, beyond irreverent narration, and the infamous killer mask donned by our very own ‘Screamettes.'”

Catch “The Unauthorized Musical Parody of Scream!” at Rockwell Table and Stage Oct. 8 through Nov. 14. Tickets can be purchased here.
