Aimee Mann to Bring Christmas Show to the Largo
Jenny Lester
Have you missed her? After a three-year hiatus, Aimee Mann is back with her annual Christmas extravaganza. Aptly billed “The Return of the Aimee Mann Christmas Show,” Aimee Mann will be appearing at Largo at The Coronet on December 3 and December 4 to kick off her short holiday tour. The somewhat-explicit-always-delightful variety show appeared in 2006 and has been chock full of Christmas classics, videos, sketches, music, comedy and surprise guests on both coasts over the years. Headliner Mann will be joined by a full program of comedians, musicians and celebrities in each city. Surprise guests for the Los Angeles engagement have not been announced, but previous guests include Fred Armisen, Weird Al Yankovic, John C. Reilly and Grant Lee Phillips among many others.
Mann gained fame and early success in the late 1970s with the new wave band, ‘Til Tuesday, after dropping out of Berklee College of Music. The band recorded three successful albums together before Mann left to pursue a solo career in the early nineties. Mann has enjoyed consistent success since, and boasts an impressive eight album collection. Many of Mann’s tracks have appeared in film and television, including a variety of original soundtrack songs. Perhaps most notable are the original songs she penned for the film “Magnolia,” which earned her both Academy Award and Grammy Award nominations.
After a three year break, the queen of alternative rock is once again presenting her holiday spectacle. This time it is with partner Ted Leo in tow. The duo has been performing together since 2012 under the moniker, “The Both,” and released their first album together in April of this year. Even more recently, the pair dropped lone Christmas track, “Nothing Left to Do (Let’s Make This Christmas Blue).” Since the nineties, Ted Leo has maintained a solo career, in addition to playing with many punk rock bands, including Citizen’s Arrest and Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. Susanna Hoffs of The Bangles will join both of The Both members for almost all of the dates on the six week tour.
Largo at The Coronet has played host to musical legends and comedy superstars for years, combining the two mediums on a regular basis. The Hollywood hotspot is notable for a variety of other artistic ventures as well, including nights of spoken word and the allowance of laptops in the audience for patrons to live blog during shows. Cafe Largo, later shortened to just Largo, was originally located on Fairfax, but relocated to The Coronet Theatre on La Cienega in 2008. Aimee Mann has developed many of her shows at both venues and returns on a regular basis to play and record. You have two nights this winter to catch this exceptional show. Aimee, never go away again.
Aimee Mann will be at Largo at The Coronet with ‘The Return of the Aimee Mann Christmas Show,’ Dec. 3 and 4. Both shows are sold out.
