‘Melrose Trading Post’ Hits Fairfax Every Sunday

The idea and artistry behind buying local is certainly anything but old-fashioned and Angelenos love to buy local and fair trade. That is why every weekend hundreds come out and support local artists and vendors at Los Angeles’s favorite weekend market, The Melrose Trading Post.

Forget Hollywood Boulevard, The Melrose Trading Post is the real place to see the stars. Low-key locals and A-list celebrities alike frequent the market on Sunday mornings. The weekly event boasts a star-studded list of regulars, including Taylor Swift, Vanessa Hudgens, and Joe Jonas. Don’t let the clientele fool you. The prices are incredibly reasonable, and most vendors will haggle if you’re up for the challenge. Vintage clothing, artwork, jewelry, and antiques- it’s impossible to attend the market just to browse. Expect to leave with a few treasures.

The Melrose Trading Post began as a fundraiser for the Greenway Arts Alliance. The non-profit theatre organization puts on professional shows, provides educational theatre programs, and supports a number of other nonprofits in Los Angeles. In 1998, the group discovered The Greenway Court, a virtually unused theatre on the campus of Fairfax High School. It was here their home was born and the name naturally followed. The Melrose Trading Post initially helped to fund the theatre company’s vision, but quickly became a Los Angeles staple.

The market now works to engage the greater Fairfax High School community in a community outreach program. The local vendors and artists are happy to rent spaces on the high school grounds as the bulk of proceeds go to funding school projects. In fact, the new football field on campus is a result of the profits from the market. The consistent foot traffic week-to-week isn’t a bad perk, either. Next time you have friends visiting from out of town, assure them they can still hike Runyon, and see the Hollywood Sign, but the Melrose Trading Post is a must-see.

The Melrose Trading Post is open every Sunday at Fairfax High School on Melrose. There is a small entrance fee at the door.
