Jon Bellion Delivers His Definition to El Rey
There are a million and one pop stars out there, but only a fraction of them can write their own hits, and on top of that write smash singles for other artists in their spare time. That is what sets Jon Bellion apart from the crowd. His debut exploded on Facebook, he has written for the biggest names in pop and most recently worked with one of the biggest DJs out there. His name caused a murmur in previous years, but in 2015, it’s bound to cause a roar.
Mixtapes are all the rage for young indie artists. In 2011, Bellion dropped his first, “Scattered Thoughts Vol. 1.” After more than 11,000 people took to his Facebook to download it, record labels started to take notice and he was signed to Visionary Music Group in 2012. That same year he garnered even more attention when his cover of Drake’s “The Motto” went viral. The following year he churned out two mixtapes and started to outsource his writing skills by penning the chorus to Rihanna’s number one single, “The Monster.” The success of that led him to co-write Jason Derulo’s top 10 track “Trumpets.”
By that point, it was proven early on in Bellion’s career that he wasn’t going to be a name that was here and gone with the change of the pop music winds. Last year he released his latest mixtape, “The Definition,” and soon after headed out on his first headlining tour that October. On the heels of that, he continued to push singles and is now standing alongside the world renowned famous DJ Zedd in promoting the song they did together on the DJ’s most recent release, “Beautiful Now.” It’s bound to not only be a contender for song of the summer, but it will ensure that Bellion is a household name by the time the world rings in 2016.
Heavily influenced by Kanye West, Bellion not only was musically moved by him, but West was also the reason he dropped out of college to pursue a more creative career path. Rap aside, Bellion’s style has some pop elements to it that surely comes from his love of John Mayer and Coldplay. That fusion of hip hop and pop makes for a show that fans of Bellion’s pal Derulo and Chris Brown would enjoy.
Jon Bellion plays the El Rey June 7. Tickets can be purchased here.
