‘The 5th Wave’ Crashes Into The Big Screen

Sci-fi film based on the best-selling novel, “The 5th Wave,” will come to theaters January 22, starring Chloë Grace Moretz alongside Nick Robinson (“The Kings of Summer,” “Jurassic World”). The film revolves around an alien invasion that seems to be happening in five installments. It begins with power outages to the planet where electricity, technology, and the Internet  are all shut off.  An earthquake that impacted the entire world causing tsunamis and total destruction is the result of the second wave. The third wave created widespread disease and epidemics taking out tens of millions of people. The fourth wave was human body invasion as the Others were able to infiltrate existing bodies and possess them. No one is safe, no one is to be trusted, and if the Others have their way, no one is going to make it out alive.

The film revolves around Cassie Sullivan, played by Moretz, as she becomes determined to train, learn about and fight the Others after they’ve taken her little brother Sammy. She begins training with a man named Evan Walker (Alex Roe) in order to fight the Others, prepare for the 5th wave of attack, and save her little brother.

Moretz’s first big role came as Hit-Girl in “Kick-Ass” when she was just 13 years old. She’s been able to successfully transition from child actor to bona fide actress with very little difficulty. In addition to starring in “Kick-Ass 2” as Hit-Girl all grown up, Moretz has also been in “Hugo,” “The Equalizer” and 2013’s “Carrie.”

But her biggest role came with the announcement that she would be playing the lead in the upcoming 2017 film “The Little Mermaid,” an adaptation of the fairytale. And since the film is coming from Working Title Films and not Disney, the similarities between the animated feature and this live action film are unknown. Whether it will be a light and uplifting, or dark and gritty portrayal of the fairy tale is yet to be seen.

The 5th Wave” rolls into theaters nationwide on Jan. 22.
