Caribou Set to Play Three Nights at The Fonda

Canadian composer Dan Snaith, known in the music realm as Caribou, will play not one, not two, but three nights in a row at The Fonda starting February 26, 2015.

When it comes to being a musician that doesn’t want to use his or her own name, it’s hard. The music industry is chalked full of similar monikers. Snaith thought he was okay but ended up in a legal snafu when he started out as Manitoba. Well, legal action was never actually taken, but The Dictators’ Richard “Handsome Dick” Manitoba did threaten Snaith with a lawsuit. So he backed down and changed his stage name. Then, when asked about the whole thing he said, “[It’s] like The Smiths suing John Smith or something.” While he then went to Caribou, he did release some music in 2012 under the name Daphni.

Most of his career though has been as Caribou and that’s where it resides today. His first record dropped right after the millennium, but it wasn’t until 2005 that he dropped his first as Caribou, “The Milk of Human Kindness.” Three more followed, with his most recent being 2014’s “Our Love.” The name change may have served him only good because it’s as Caribou that he’s had the most success. He’s won numerous awards around the world like the Polaris Music Prize in 2008 and 2010, a Juno in 2011, and Mixmag Essential Mix of the Year last year.

This electronic artist puts on a show, performing as more than what one would think. He’s not a DJ behind a laptop but rather a music man. He’s been known to have his hands on the keys or percussion during his sets, and can often be seen accompanied by a trio of other musical men; Ryan Smith, Brad Weber and John Schmersal. So fans can expect intricate performances and deliveries of favorites like “Yeti,” “Melody Day” and “Can’t Do Without You.”

Before Caribou takes over The Fonda for three nights, he’ll be down in Australia and then around Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand. After LA he’ll head north and then to the UK before heading back to Southern California for both weekends of Coachella in Indio. There is no debating that this Ontario born artist has a lot on his touring plate in 2015. He has dates scheduled around the world through July.
