Patrick Stewart Reveals Secrets in New Indie Film ‘Match’

Patrick Stewart has a secret past, at least he will onscreen in his new film “Match.”  In this upcoming drama, Stewart plays Tobi Powell, a renowned former dancer and current Julliard professor who is approached by grad student Lisa (Carla Gugino) and her husband Mike (Matthew Lillard) to arrange an interview for Lisa’s dissertation on dance history. Complications arise when is becomes apparent that the couple has ulterior motives for questioning Powell.

Viewers shouldn’t expect to see Stewart drone on and on about the art of dance and technique.  According to an early Variety review of “Match,” Lisa and Mike initially meet Tobi at a diner, but end up at the latter’s NYC apartment, where alcohol and marijuana cause the trio to get more comfortable.  The conversation soon turns to Tobi’s sexual adventures back in his heyday, a subject Lisa and Mike are very much interested to explore.  As the couple’s questions became more personal, their true motive begins to emerge.

Because of its few locations and small cast, “Match” was shot in only 15 days in January 2013.  It went on to premier at the Tribeca Film Festival this past April and is being distributed by IFC Films this month.

“Match” opens in Los Angeles Jan. 14, 2015.
