Brooke Fraser to Bring Her “Brutal Romance” to The Fonda

New Zealand-born Brooke Fraser will be performing at The Fonda Theatre on Thursday, January. 29 as presented by Goldenvoice.

The eldest of three children, Brooke was raised in Wellington, New Zealand, where she would take piano lessons from the age of seven to 17. She first began writing songs when she was 12, going on to teach herself acoustic guitar at 15. Also at 15, Fraser began writing for magazine Soul Purpose,” filling in the position of editor only to give it up as to pursue an actual career in music behind the guitar, not simply in front of it.

Debut album “What to Do with Daylight” was released in 2004, which came out at number one and snagged the gold status that very same week. The album ultimately went on seven times platinum, selling over 105,000 copies in New Zealand alone. She then hit the road and went on tour with John Mayer in New Zealand and Australia, then one-upping that tour by joining David Bowie on his tour in New Zealand.

“Albertine” is Fraser’s second album, released internationally in 2006. “Flags” came next, which she recorded at East West Studios in Hollywood in 2010. While at number 1 in New Zealand and number 3 in Australia, the album was at 59 on the Billboard 200 list in the states, and climbed very fast to claim the third spot on the U.S. iTunes album chart.

Her latest work comes in the form of “Brutal Romantic,” which is described to be an introspective, yearning, and earnest collection of pieces. Released in November 2014, the album features “Psychosocial” and “Kings & Queens.”

When asked about her more electric sound on this album, Fraser responded, “I knew when I finished recording the third album that the next project I did I wanted to do something that was really different that took me out of my comfort zone. My voice has always been against really warm, lush sounds. Since my voice is quite breathy, I wanted to see what would happen if I put it against something spiky and cold and mechanical.”

Regarding the album’s name, Fraser explained that her idea of a brutal romance is “just about life.” She stated, “Life is joy and sorrow, anguish and delight, traumatic and mundane. It’s all of those things and it’s brutally romantic.”
