Over the Rhine Will Grace The Troubadour

The Ohio natives creating the acoustic harmonies of folk-band, Over the Rhine, have been working diligently since 1989, releasing 16 albums since their start. Although, it may be easier to manage your time when the frontrunners of your band are accomplished musicians and a long-time married couple. Releasing their most recent album this last holiday season, “Blood Oranges in the Snow,” the couple is taking their band on the road to spread their acquired acoustic skill through California. Hitting West Hollywood, Over the Rhine will appear at the Troubadour on Feb. 18.

Putting music first, the lead singer Karin Bergquist married Linford Detweiler, Over the Rhine’s bassist/pianist. The couple worked together as chief songwriters of the band for 6 years before getting married. With other band members joining and leaving through the years, Over the Rhine has remained consistent in their ability to produce new albums at a rapid fire pace, in addition to occasional live albums and compilations. When they’re not writing music, Over the Rhine takes to the stage, either on their own or accompanying legends like Bob Dylan and John Prine.

Working together or apart, the members of Over the Rhine keep themselves busy.

Detweiler has released a couple of solo albums over the years, while Ric Hordinski, the bands original guitarist has gone on to work as a solo artist and a member of the band, Monk. These days, Over the Rhine is keeping things minimal, performing just as a couple. For this next tour, they will be going strictly acoustic, trading in musical effects for a beautiful and bare performance.

Adding to Over the Rhine’s pseudo-alternative sounds will be the lingering vocals of William Fitzimmons, an astounding singer/songwriter driven by haunting lyrics and hushed instrumentation. Hailing from Pittsburgh, Fitzimmons explored music as a young child of two blind parents. Teaching himself guitar and eventually banjo, melodica, ukulele and mandolin, Fitzimmons self-recorded his music and compiled them to make his first album, “Until When We Are Ghosts.” Since then, Fitzimmons’ music has fallen in many television show soundtracks, garnering a well-rounded fan base. Complementing the sounds of Over the Rhine, William Fitzimmons will start the night off lulling the audience into a hypnotic musical journey, which will last out the night at the Troubadour on Feb. 18.
